The preview is not the product
A social pack looks convincing in a listing because the seller has art-directed it. The photo is a licensed stock image, the icons came from a paid set, the font is a commercial face, and the mockup is placed on a clean background. What you download is the layout underneath. Most of the gap between expectation and delivery sits in that difference.
Three things decide whether a purchase is useful: which file format you are actually getting, whether the dimensions are current, and which assets in the preview are placeholders. None of them are visible from a thumbnail grid, and all three are answerable from the listing text if the seller has written it properly.
Canva link or source file — these are not interchangeable
Editable social templates arrive in one of two shapes, and the listing should state which.
Canva link
A canva template is delivered as a link you copy into your own Canva account. You edit it in the browser, share it with a collaborator, and export PNG, JPG, PDF or MP4 depending on the design. No desktop software required.
Figma or PSD
Figma and PSD templates arrive as source files. You open them locally, work on layers, and export from the application. This suits anyone with an existing design workflow, a brand library, or a need to hand files to a developer.
What buyers get wrong is assuming these overlap. A Canva template cannot be opened in Photoshop. If your team works in Adobe, a Canva-delivered instagram carousel template is close to useless to you, however good the design is. If your team works in a browser and has no Adobe licences, a PSD pack is the same problem in reverse. Check the delivery method before anything else — it is the one attribute that cannot be worked around.

Platform sizes move, and packs do not
Feed, story and thumbnail dimensions are set by the platforms, and they change. Reels covers, LinkedIn post crops and Instagram story safe areas have all shifted over time, and they will shift again.
A pack built around last year's sizes still opens. It still looks fine in the editor. It just does not post cleanly — text sits under the profile overlay, the carousel crop eats a headline, the reels cover template leaves a band of dead space where the grid preview cuts in.
The only reliable check is to ask when the seller last verified dimensions. A vague answer, or a listing with no update history, means you should budget time to resize everything yourself. That is not a defect in the product; it is the nature of designing for platforms you do not control.

The photos in the preview are usually not included
The imagery that makes a social media pack look good is frequently licensed to the author alone. That licence does not transfer to you. Buy the pack and you get the layout, not the photograph inside it.
Expect to supply your own photography. Before buying, read the listing for which assets are marked as placeholders — a well-written listing will say so directly. If it does not, ask.
The same applies to icons and fonts. Icons drawn from a paid library and fonts under a commercial licence are rarely bundled. Substituting a free font changes the metrics of every text layer, which is why a pack that looked balanced in the preview can look cramped once you swap in your own typeface.
Two further risks sit alongside this. First, AI-generated work should be disclosed — if a listing does not say whether imagery or illustration was AI-generated, that is information you are missing, not information you can assume. Second, a shared design cannot become your exclusive mark. If a hundred other buyers are running the same linkedin post template, it will not function as brand identity, whatever the licence permits.
Signals in a listing worth reading twice
A listing that answers the format, the dimension check date, the placeholder assets and the licence scope is doing its job. A listing that answers none of them is not necessarily hiding anything, but you are buying on assumption.

- Which assets are placeholders
- Whether AI-generated elements are disclosed
- Confirmation the work is the seller's own, or licensed to them in writing
That last point matters more than it looks. Listings must be the seller's own work, or work they hold a written licence to sell. A social media pack assembled from someone else's templates is a problem that lands on the buyer eventually.
What you cannot check before purchase
Some things are simply not verifiable from a listing page, and it is worth being honest about which.
You cannot confirm how a template behaves once your own content is dropped in — long headlines, unusual aspect ratios, right-to-left scripts and dense data all stress a layout in ways a preview never shows. You cannot confirm that a font substitution will hold. You cannot confirm how quickly a seller responds to a question about a broken link or a missing layer, though their response to your pre-purchase question is a reasonable proxy.
What you can do is ask the specific questions before paying, and treat evasiveness as a signal. Most of the failure modes above are cheap to resolve in advance and expensive to resolve afterwards, when you have already committed a week to resizing a pack that arrived in the wrong format.
Questions buyers ask
Do I need a Canva account?
For Canva-delivered templates, yes. They arrive as a link you copy into your own account, and editing happens in the browser. Figma and PSD templates arrive as files instead, so you need the relevant desktop application rather than a Canva login. The listing states which you are getting.
Are the sizes current?
Platform dimensions change, so the useful question is when the seller last checked them. A pack built around older sizes will need reworking before it posts cleanly, particularly for story formats and reels cover templates where overlays sit close to the edges. Ask directly; a specific date is a good answer.
Are the photos included?
Usually not. Preview imagery is frequently licensed to the author alone and does not transfer with the purchase. Expect to supply your own photography, and check the listing for which assets are marked as placeholders before you buy.
Can I use these for client social accounts?
The default licence is commercial, which normally covers client work. What it does not cover is reselling or redistributing the template pack itself — you cannot pass the editable files on as a product of your own. If your use sits anywhere near that line, get it in writing first.
